Finished shots of the miniature Paddy Wagon we built for @asaprocky's incredible new music video #babushkaboi. See previous posts for process photos and BTS pics. A huge shout out and thank you to @thebritttt who brought us in for the build and did an incredible job as the video's Production Designer and to @nadialeelee for killing it once again in the director's chair🔥🙏👏🙏🔥 .
Here's a process progression for the wheels of the paddy wagon we made for #asaprocky's #babushkaboi music video (check out the previous posts too). . This process is called #vacuumforming, whereby you sculpt a particular shape, heat up a sheet of plastic and use a vacuum suction to form the heated plastic into the shape of your sculpt. It is a really cool technique that has a million applications and is excellent for creating duplicates of a sculpt quickly and durably. (This is the same way the entire front end of the vehicle was created as well) . Scroll through the photo set and you can see the process begin with a simple shape created with a rigid prototyping foam, then sanded, shaped and slightly detailed with a piece of styrene for extra relief detail. . . Once a copy was made for each wheel, they where trimmed and test fitted into the actual rubber wheel. In the final photo you can see the extra nut/bolt details added and painted. .
A few BTS pics of the fabrication process that went in to building the paddy wagon for #asaprocky's insanely cool new music video #babushkaboi (see previous post). . The build took about 8 days and involved multiple mediums and techniques. In the end, the body was made entirely of #styrene, some of which was vacuum formed from sculpts we created using prototyping foam (sculpted by hand) as well as good old fashioned model making techniques. We glued everything together with weld-on and seamed it with Bondo, followed by lots of patient sanding. . The last picture shows all the little 'prop' details that were added for final assembly after it had been painted. . We get asked a lot if we do any 3-D printing and the answer is generally no. With the tight turnaround we usually have to work with, coupled with and so many components that need to interact together, believe it or not, handmade is often faster since there is so little time to plan. Making things by hand allows for quick and easy modification to little surprises that continually pop up throughout the build. While 3-D printing does have its advantages in some areas, it's not always the fastest route. Plus handmade is way more fun 😜
We've been incredibly excited to share this one for a while and it finally came out! Check out A$AP ROCKY’s BABUSHKA video. We made the miniature Paddy Wagon. Fabricated entirely from scratch (with exception to the rubber part of the wheels) in about 8 days. Made mostly from styrene, the piece was about 33" long and even has working lights! . Beautiful work by the entire crew and endless thanks to our friend and amazing production designer @thebritttt for bringing us in on this one - we're very proud to have had a hand in it!🙏🙏🙏 we'll post some BTS build pics shortly. . @thebritttt with @make_repost ・・・ A$AP ROCKY’s BABUSHKA starring @asaprocky @asapferg @kamilxabbas @asvpnvst @groovyq ✨ Excited to share this very special project, Directed by @nadialeelee Production @virginsoilpictures DP @simdug Hair @samiknighthair Styling @shirleykurata Makeup @worshipmina @krystamua @allydoesmakeup Edit @g_scruton —— PRODUCTION DESIGN by me 💃🏻 with the most amazing team who I love very much. We had a fun little quick turnaround project a few weeks back - we had to turn two Fisher Price toy phones into actual working rotary telephones that could dial out and receive calls. Lots of fun, albeit surprisingly tricky given the limited real estate inside the toy chassis. Part 3 of 3 Old Spice spots. The backdrop scene was hand painted front and back on 1/4" clear acrylic to give it a slight feel of depth. DP @kellzmoore came up with a clever way of lighting it that gave it a fantastic shimmering effect by bouncing light off of a pool of water filled with broken glass. The little stop motion crab was a last minute edition, but really finished everything off beautifully! All 3 spots (see previous posts) were fabricated in 3 weeks and principal shooting was all completed in a single whirlwind of a day! @wiedenkennedy always makes the impossible happen and we had a blast being part of the ride!
Post number 2 of 3 from A series of Old Spice spots we fabricated in 3 weeks. This one posed a few fun challenges in that it included a live actor, makeup prosthetics, puppeteered FX and no R&D time. The gag was the mountain top blowing off of the actor's head to reveal sculpted hair underneath. We didn't really have the time to try different things so after some back and forth, we ultimately went with string draped over rigging to yank the rocks from the actor's head. The rocks were numbered and locked together like a puzzle and sprinkled with Fullers Earth and Vermicullite, so we could easily reset the shot during the shoot day. Took a few tries to get it just right but turned out pretty cool! WK's production team was a ton of fun to work with on this. Love the final look of the shot - Leif Peterson Director, @kellzmoore DP 💥🔥💥
Very excited to finally share this recently released spot for Old Spice that we both Fabricated and performed as on set Art Department. Produced by @wiedenkennedy's editorial division Joint, this and 2 other spots (coming up shortly) were created and shot in 3 weeks. One of the most challenging aspects of projects like this happens to also be what makes them so exciting - there's never enough time and the scope is a constant moving target. WK knocked it out of the park! Scroll through the photos for some fun BTS shots. Beautifully directed by Leif Peterson, smokin' DP @kellzmoore
Whatamagump author @tyronewellsofficial recently appeared at an elementary school and had a great time sharing the story and songs with a room full of excited kiddos! With a new run of books coming in we're ready to 'take this show on the road!' (Sort of :) If you are in Southern California or in the Portland, Oregon area and are interested in having Tyrone or the guys from @brokeneaglestudio appear at your child's school in the fall, send us a message from our website www.thewhatamagump.com or DM. It will be a memorable and exciting experience for all, complete with a few fun surprises!
Process photos of the @chobani flying machine (see previous post). Mostly built from styrene plastic, our crew pulled off a scratch build miracle in 6 days. Long hours are all worth while when the result is something so cool and fun! Thanks to @talkaboutstarwars & @mattie_margaret_bowden for helping knock this one out of the park!
Closeups of the milk truck scratch build we made in the fall for @chobani. Crazy turnaround (6 days) but a very cool project for a spot produced by @anoncontent that turned out beautifully! Check out our previous post to see the full spot. Many thanks to designer extraordinaire, occasional collaborator and friend @thebritttt for bringing us in on this one! Process pics to follow...
Very excited to share this spot we worked on late October/early November for #chobani. We scratch built the flying milk truck in 6 days. @anoncontent knocked this one out of the park. Check out this hilarious Old Spice spot that we got to have a hand in. We got the call before lunch on Tuesday that they needed an oversized 'thumbs up' hand for this board room bit that was to shoot the next day after lunch. @microgeeg went into speed sculpt/paint mode and we managed to deliver just in time. The joke was that the boss' hand would enter the room to give an idea his approval or disapproval at various points during the performance. Great work by the actors in this weird, funny spot! You can watch it by searching YouTube for "old spice board room" 😂😂😂 (don't forget to scroll through the process pics) . . . . . . . . . #thumbsup #thumbsdown #sculpting #sculpture #speedsculp #oversized #modelmaker #modelmaking #foamcarving #foamsculpting #portlandartist #pdxartist #portland #fabrication #fabricator #fabricationstudio #brokeneaglestudio
@microgeeg 's sculpting trick is an art unto itself. Very fast and accurate way to rough out a sculpture with a rigid material. This piece is about 5" long and 'sculpted' on a band saw. We've done this on a table saw with larger sculpts too! Scroll through the images for process. This was a quick sketch on rigid foam, 30min on a band saw, a few minutes breaking off the flashing and 45 minutes with a file and Dremel to refine. Now it's ready for a little clay and fine detailing. . . . . . . . . . . . #bandsaw #sculpting #sculpture #handmade #quicksketch #speedsculpt #sheep #brokeneaglestudio #portland #portlandartist #pdxartist #fabrication #fabricator #advertising #fabricationstudio #modelmaker #modelmaking #propfabrication
Here is another set we built for some @instagram commercial spots (sound on). DP @kellzmoore killed it on the lighting - all practical visuals, no digital effects. We were set fabrication and on set art department for shoot days. The entire production team did incredible work to bring this set to life! Directed by Leif Peterson, gorgeous set design by @thebritttt , shoes by @theshoesurgeon, shoe styling by @bjamesneel , @sugar_boogerz , awesomely wacky puppeteering by @alohamonami and born from the crazy creative brains @wiedenkennedy . . . . . . . #brokeneaglestudio #pdxartist #artdepartment #fabricationlife #commercialshoot #portlandartist #commercial #instagram #wiedenkennedy #fabrication #fabricator #production #setbuilding #setbuild #handmade #foam #asmr #freakysneaks #opticalillusion #optical #opticalillusions
The set we fabricated for Instagram's #freakysneaks #mermazing commercial spot posed some fun problem solving challenges. The 'star' of the spot (#mermaid shoes) sat atop a rock we sculpted from pink insulation foam. Since the whole spot takes place in water, we had to figure out how to keep the foam rock from floating! With only a couple of days to turn the set around, there wasn't any time to R&D. To do it, we backfilled the inside cavity of the rock with gravel and poured urethane resin over the gravel to lock it all into place. We then secured the whole unit to water tank floor with #Velcro. Our little rock wound up weighing 50-60 lbs, but it worked like a charm! Never a dull moment in this business - and that's why we love it! . . . . . . . #brokeneaglestudio #commercialshoot #artdepartment #foamsculpture #portlandartist #portlandartists #pdxartist #fabrication #fabricator #commercial #fabricationlife #modelmaker #modelmaking #setfabrication #setbuilding #watertank #production #productionlife #handmade
